Ingredients:

  • 2 ¼ teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon lemon peel, grated
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup slivered almonds
  • 1/2 cup candied cherries, halved
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk

Instructions:

Step 1: In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar in the warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes or until it becomes foamy.

Step 2: Combine the milk, butter, salt, remaining sugar, eggs, lemon peel, and vanilla extract in a separate bowl. Add this mixture to the yeast mixture and mix well.

Step 3: Gradually add the flour to the mixture until the dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic.

Step 4: Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a clean cloth. Allow the dough to rise in a warm area until it doubles in size, around 1 hour.

Step 5: Preheat your oven to 375°F. Mix the raisins, almonds, and cherries in a separate bowl.

Step 6: Punch down the dough and roll it into a rectangle. Sprinkle the raisin mixture over the dough and roll it up tightly, making sure to pinch the ends closed.

Step 7: Place the dough on a greased baking sheet and allow it to rise for an additional 30 minutes. Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

Step 8: Once done, allow the bread to cool to room temperature. Mix the powdered sugar and milk in a bowl until it becomes a glaze. Drizzle this glaze over the bread before serving.

Enjoy this delicious Swiss Christmas bread with your loved ones this holiday season. It’s the perfect way to indulge in the flavors of the holidays and make lasting memories with your family!
